In this moving service, Rev Max presents us with verbal pictures as he spiritually walks us through each of the 14 Stations of the Cross. After each station, there is a prayer, some part of which is repeated below.
|
Before each station we sing together
Lord, make Calvary real to me,
Lord, make Calvary real to me,
Open my heart to see victory in Christ for me,
Lord, make Calvary real to me.
and then we say:
'We adore you, O Christ, and worship you.'
And the celebrant answers:
'Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.'
|
The first station:
Christ is condemned to death by Pilate |
Yes, my loving Christ, it was not Pilate;
no, it was my own will that condemned you to die.
I ask you by the merits of the cross
to assist my soul
in its journey towards wholeness.
|
The second station:
Jesus takes up his cross
and is made to bear it. |
My beloved Christ,
I embrace all the trials and testings
which will come to me in this life until death.
I ask you, by the merit of the pain you suffered,
to give me the necessary power to carry with you,
with patience, the cross of my existence.
|
The third station:
Jesus falls
for the first time under the cross. |
O Christ, it is not the weight of your cross;
but the weight of my selfish will
and missing the purpose of my life,
which made you to suffer so much pain.
|
The fourth station:
Jesus meets his mother on the road. |
O Christ,
who by the sorrow you did experience
in this meeting with your earthly mother,
grant to us the grace of really listening
to divine love and divine intuition.
|
The fifth station:
Simon of Cyrene
is compelled to carry Jesus' cross. |
O my beloved Christ,
I will not refuse the cross,
as Simon of Cyrene did,
but will accept it.
|
The sixth station:
Jesus walks the streets of Jerusalem with the cross on his shoulders and the women weep for him.
Veronica wipes his face. |
Alas, my soul was also once beautiful,
when it left the heavenly regions
for this earthly existence,
but I have disfigured it through my own will.
You, my Redeemer,
can restore it to its former beauty.
|
The seventh station:
Jesus falls
for the second time under the cross. |
My beloved Christ,
how many times have you forgiven me
and how many times
have I fallen under my cross,
only to get up and offend you again
|
The eight station:
Jesus meets the weeping women,
the daughters of Jerusalem. |
O beloved Christ, I weep for my failings,
which I have committed.
I weep for my emotions,
which guide me the wrong way.
I weep for the pleasures and desires
which satisfy for a moment
and for the neglect of my feminine soul,
which keeps me from my peace.
|
The ninth station:
Jesus falls
for the third time under the cross. |
My beloved Christ,
We acknowledge our weakness
and our reluctance to go to Calvary to be crucified.
Give us sufficient strength...
|
The tenth stations:
Jesus reaches the top of Mount Calvary and is stripped to be crucified. |
O my innocent Christ,
Help me to voluntarily shed the garments
of my negative thoughts and limitations...
|
The eleventh station:
Jesus is nailed to the cross |
My Christ,
Nail my heart to your feet,
Nail my mind to your hands,
so that I may ever remain in your love...
|
The twelfth station:
Jesus dies on the cross. |
My Christ,
I accept your cross,
and I am willing to die alone...
|
The thirteenth station:
Jesus is taken down from the cross. |
O Christ,
Even though I shall be unable
to appreciate love to the full,
let divine love always surround me,...
|
The fourteenth station:
Jesus is laid in the tomb. |
My buried Christ,
I thank you for the tomb that encloses you.
But when you rise from that tomb,
let me rise with you,
|
At the conclusion of the 14 Stations, the candles are snuffed and the altar undressed.
