Lord, make Calvary real for me,
Lord, make Calvary real to me;
Open my eyes to see vic'try in Christ for me;
Lord, make Calvary real to me.
We are singing this song during Holy Week prior to our daily contemplations..
Office of the Tenebrae

A contemporary celebration in music, song and scripture reading
of an ancient service of light and darkness.
The Office of the Tenebrae is a highly dramatic service
enacted with light and darkness.

We experienced the awe and solitude of the tomb
of our beloved Christ when at the climatic moment of the service
the chapel was plunged into desolate darkness.

The chapel is alight with the seven candles on the altar and the candle beside the altar.
Musicians Altar
During this service, we listen to the story
from the garden of Gethsemene
to the burial in the tomb.
in readings from the four Gospels and in song.
First a reading, and then the song...
...and one of the seven candles is snuffed.
This is continued until all seven candles are out.
The musicians
- playing and singing.

Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
O - sometimes it causes my to tremble, tremble, tremble;
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

Were you there in dark Gethsemene?
Were you there in dark Gethsemene?
O - sometimes it causes my to tremble, tremble, tremble;
Were you there in dark Gethsemene?

Were you there when Judas kissed his cheek?
Were you there when Judas kissed his cheek?
O - sometimes it causes my to tremble, tremble, tremble;
Were you there when Judas kissed his cheek?

Were you there when Peter said, "Don't know him?"
 Were you there when Peter said, "Don't know him?"
O - sometimes it causes my to tremble, tremble, tremble;
Were you there when Peter said, "Don't know him?"

Were you there when they scourged him with the whip?
Were you there when they scourged him with the whip?
O - sometimes it causes my to tremble, tremble, tremble;
Were you there when they scourged him with the whip?

Were you there when Pilate washed his hands?
Were you there when Pilate washed his hands?
O - sometimes it causes my to tremble, tremble, tremble;
Were you there when Pilate washed his hands?

Were you there as he walked to Calvary?
Were you there as he walked to Calvary?
O - sometimes it causes my to tremble, tremble, tremble;
Were you there as he walked to Calvary?

All 7 candles are out.
All seven candles are out.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
O - sometimes it causes my to tremble, tremble, tremble;
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
The single candle on the right is now carried out of the chapel.
The light leaving the chapel.
Darkness

We experience the darkness. The light is gone. We are in the tomb.

In the beginning was the word,
and the word was with God,
and the word was God.
He was in the beginning with God;
all things were made through him,
and without him was not anything made that was made.
In him was life,
and the life was the light of every human being.
The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not overcome it
.
The true light that enlightens everyone
was coming into the world.
He was in the world,
and the world knew him not.
He came to his own home,
and his own people received him not.
But to all who received him,
who believed in his name,
he gave power to become children of God,
who were born, not of blood
nor of the will of the flesh
nor of the human will,
but of God.
And the word became flesh
and dwelt amongst us, full of grace and truth;
we have beheld his glory,
glory as of the only son from the Father.

However, the light returns! Death and desolation does not prevail.
The inner process of death and resurrection
is a well known inner process of renewal and transformation.

The light prevails.
Father
to you we raise our whole being,
a vessel emptied of self.
Accept O Lord, this our emptiness
and so fill us with yourself, your life, your light, your love,
that these your gracious gifts may radiate through us
and overflow the chalice of our hearts
into the hearts of all with whom we come in contact,
revealing unto them the the beauty of your joy and wholeness
and the serenity of you peace
which nothing can destroy.
Were you there when he rose up from the tomb?
Were you there when he rose up from the tomb?
O - sometimes it causes my to tremble, tremble, tremble;
Were you there when he rose up from the tomb?
