Lord, make Calvary real for me,
Lord, make Calvary real to me;
Open my eyes to see vic'try in Christ for me;
Lord, make Calvary real to me.
We are singing this song during Holy Week prior to our daily contemplations. |
|
We are seated together at tables,
we co-celebrate the Agape with the priests.
As we commerate the events of Good Friday,
we share in a simple communion meal of bread (hot cross buns)
and wine (or non-alcoholic fruit juice). |
|
When I survey the wonderous cross
On which the prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride. |
|
|
He was despised and rejected by men;
a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief;
and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised,
and we esteemed him not.
Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that made us whole,
and with his stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth;
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is dumb,
so he opened not his mouth.
from Isaiah 53: 1-12 |

|
My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
Why art thou so far from helping me,
from the words of my groaning?
O my God, I cry by day, but thou dost not answer;
and by night, but find no rest.
Yet thou art holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.
In thee our fathers trusted;
they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.
To thee they cried, and were saved;
in thee they trusted, and were not disappointed...
...Posterity shall serve him;
men shall tell of the Lord to the coming generation,
and proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn,
that he has wrought it.
Psalm 22 |
|
"My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?'
Words spoken by Christ on the cross.
Not words that tell of abandonment by God
but words of praise and destiny when all of Psalm 22 is read.
Words known by Christ and in quoting the first line
he cries out aloud the meaning of the cross.
